PUTRAJAYA: Representatives of Islamic non-governmental organisations had a two-hour meeting with Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi yesterday, expressing concern on matters relating to Islam and the Constitution. Muslim Youth Movement of Malaysia (Abim) president Yusri Mohamad said it was important that everyone recognised that they should not meddle with things that had been going fine for decades.

In August last year, 34-year-old Yusri Mohamad was entrusted with the responsibility - reluctantly, by admission - to head the Muslim Youth Movement of Malaysia (Abim) for the 2005/2007 session. He takes over from Ahmad Azam Abdul Rahman, 46, who held the post for eight years. The International Islamic University law lecturer who is now doing his PhD in Islamic Jurisprudence told HUSNA YUSOP how he felt being one of the youngest NGO leaders during meetings with the government and why the previous leadership had decided on a younger line-up this session.

Di antara masalah-masalah terbesar belia Islam di negara kita adalah kelunturan jatidiri, persaingan dalam akademik dan dunia pekerjaan. Bagi saya, masalah utamanya tetap kelunturan jatidiri mereka. Maknanya, belia Islam di negara kita tidak cukup mantap keIslaman, keMelayuan dan patriotismenya. Cabaran dan masalah lain akan mampu ditentangi oleh para belia Islam jika mereka masih utuh kekuatan peribadi dan nilai. Jika tidak masalah picisan pun akan mengganggu tumpuan dan memalingkan mereka dari landasan kejayaan dan keunggulan.
